Split the atom’s heart, and lo!
Within it thou wilt find a sun.
- from a Persian mystic poem
A bridge between two series of paintings, El Sol La Noche began as tulips and developed in to a bursting, floral abstraction. I see in it day & night as the title (“evening sun”) suggests and San Antonio's distinct Tex-Mex culture. I think of S. Alamo Street, The Blue Star, Mexican embroidery, stucco buildings and the blurry heat of a late summer afternoon. I feel an invitation to mystery and dream of music at night and the clank of feet on cobble stone streets.
Turns out tulips (which you can still see in an abstracted form) symbolize true love, forgiveness and nobility.
